- The answer isn't as relevant to this discussion as the REASON for the
- answer. High-speed asynch modems are NEW to the telecomunications world,
- which is why things like Zmodem, SeaLink, Ymodem/etc all are very popular.
-
- Now that better modem technology exists, the protocols will move up with
- it. It didn't take long after V.32 itself started to get moving that a
- few fidonet authors took ahold of Janus (OPUS and Binkley).
-
- The 'users interface' to current BBS's is too limited to make use of
- this speed advantage, but that itself is being addressed by authors
- workin on IEMSI based terminal software. Setting up a 'basis' protocol
- and allowing for multiple BBS sessions, background up/downloads/etc/etc are
- features that we can now start to move more into now that the
- modem technology is allowing for it.

- As my brother says, you have to be doing a fair amount of long distance
- before the extra cost of a USR Dual modem over other V.32Bis modems saves
- you any money. When you are doing only 16.8 HST and I'm
- doing 16.8 V.32Bis extended, 19.2K ZyXEL, FAX, Caller-ID, VoiceMail,
- Call Screening/etc/etc, I hope you'll be happy with your view that you've
- saved enough money to justify it ;-)
-
- (For reference, my bro (Who knows about USR modems, I don't look into them
- any more) says that the U.S. Sysop price on a ZyXEL U-1496E is approximately
- half that of the USR Dual, and the ZyXEL E+ modem won't be much more and
- will have likely have magnitudes more features than the USR)
