- Well, using a supposedly 'publicly documented' extension on V.32Bis,
- the ZyXEL U-modem series modems will do that *IN-BOTH-DIRECTIONS* in the
- current 'in-test' versions of the ROM (Available within the month to the
- general public).
-
- Any manufacturerwho wishes(And makes a modem capable of it) can add this
- extension, unlike HST which is an expensive-to-licence, uni-directional
- protocol only available currently from USR.
-
- Face it, with the advancements in echo-cancellation based modems,
- uni-directinal carrier protocols like HST(USR) and Express96 (Hayes)
- aren't worth looking into now that high-speed standards exist.
- Besides, if something goes wrong with your modem (Or manufacturer) you can
- move to another modem to 'upgrade' without loosing any features. All
- those 'CSP' customers probably wish that they all had V.32/V.32Bis modems
- so that they could talk to more modems.
-
- Yes, USR is going to be able to kludge additions to their HST faster than
- it takes to add enhancements to a standard like V.32Bis, but that just makes
- the V standards more stable with more thought put into them by more
- experts in the field. USR is just 'one' group of modem experts, not 'all'
- of them.

- It's not as far off for certain people as you might think. I can't give
- specific dates, but I do know that this discussion will be moot within the
- year ;-)
