  11. Acorn Launches Pocket Book

  13. Acorn Computers is launching its first Pocket Book computer.  
  14. The idea behind the Pocket Book is to provide a small
  15. portable computer that offers functionality aimed at serving
  16. the basic computing needs of every child and that is cheap
  17. enough for parents to purchase for their school children.

  19. The applications suite provided with the Pocket Book
  20. comprises a word processor, a database, a spreadsheet, a
  21. calculator and an alarm. There is also the option of adding
  22. further applications - such as a diary program via a solid
  23. state disc.  Choices are made from menus of options and each
  24. of the applications provided is self contained in its own
  25. window on the screen.

  27. The Pocket Book has an optional Archimedes link especially
  28. designed for easy transfer of information between it and
  29. Acorn's 32-bit RISC computers. The link software has been
  30. written in such a way as to make the Pocket Book appear on
  31. the desktop as just another directory viewer.

  33. In addition to the Archimedes link, there is also a fast
  34. serial port which allows access at 1.54Mbits/sec to other
  35. computers, modems and printers, and there is also a parallel
  36. printer link. On average, the two AA batteries -  which are
  37. readily available - give the Pocket Book some 80 hours of
  38. continuous use.
