  11. Acorn's RISC OS 3 Now Available for All
  12.  
  13. Acorn Computers is releasing the latest version of its RISC
  14. operating system - RISC OS 3 - as an upgrade for existing
  15. users.

  17. First installed in Acorn's A5000 computer, RISC OS 3
  18. provides some 300 key enhancements evolved from its
  19. predecessor, RISC OS 2.  Because RISC OS 3 builds upon many
  20. of the key features of its predecessor  it ensures ease of
  21. use and continuity for those switching over to the new
  22. version of the operating system. It offers complete
  23. compatibility with RISC OS 2 and allows the use of the
  24. 2,000-plus titles already available for Acorn's range of
  25. Archimedes computers.

  27. Some of these new advantages include multi-tasking filing
  28. and formatting operations, improvements in the use of the
  29. desktop environment and in the use of iconized windows,
  30. improved printer support, the ability to read DOS-format
  31. discs, support for high density floppy discs, new hot key
  32. support, and the ability to run up to 128 tasks
  33. concurrently.

  35. Twelve fonts are now provided in the 2MB of ROM together
  36. with many of the key applications provided with Acorn's
  37. range of RISC machines including Draw, Paint and Edit. These
  38. applications themselves have been further refined and
  39. improved to increase their versatility.

  41. RISC OS 3 can be fitted to all of Acorn's family of RISC
  42. computers including the Archimedes range and UNIX
  43. workstations. However, the original A305, A310 and A440 (but
  44. not the A440/1) need a simple modification in order to fit
  45. the larger ROMS. This dealer-only upgrade will be available
  46. at the same time as the software upgrade kit.

  48. Acorn's Marketing Director Mike O'Riordan said of the new
  49. upgrade "In line with our policy of offering our customers
  50. the choice of moving up to new technology in a timescale
  51. that suits them, we have ensured that RISC OS 3 is fully
  52. backwards compatible with existing applications designed for
  53. RISC OS 2.

  55. "However", he added, "I am convinced that there are so many
  56. advantages to be gained for existing users to upgrade that
  57. many will choose the early upgrade option."
