  11. Acorn introduces Universal Networking

  13. Acorn Computers has announced the first new products to be
  14. launched under its open networking strategy,  Acorn
  15. Universal Networking (AUN).

  17. AUN provides a framework for the introduction of, and access
  18. to, new networking technologies in new or existing Acorn
  19. sites.  By incorporating the relevant technologies, industry
  20. standards such as TCP/IP and the concepts of Open Systems,
  21. AUN enables different computer types to be interconnected.

  23. AUN supports different cabling systems and a key feature of
  24. AUN is that users can connect different networks in the site
  25. together via RISC OS computers running an AUN software
  26. application. This allows every computer on site to see every
  27. other computer, even when they are not connected to the same
  28. physical network.

  30. An Acorn Universal Network can consist of a number of Econet
  31. and Ethernet networks linked together via a backbone
  32. Ethernet network using RISC OS computers as Gateway
  33. stations. These computers can act at the same time as local
  34. fileservers.  In this way AUN gives users the benefit of
  35. being able to take a site-wide approach to networking and by
  36. extension their IT resources.

  38. A new release of Acorn's Level 4 Fileserver networking
  39. applications has been optimised for Ethernet support. This
  40. new product gives users the benefits of significant
  41. increased speed performance and an industry standard cabling
  42. system, albeit that existing networks can be left intact
  43. with faster cabling systems added to form a single
  44. integrated network.

  46. For example, users of Acorn's proprietary Econet network may
  47. now extend their system by adding new cabling technologies
  48. such as Ethernet, while ensuring that users can still use
  49. established Econet methods of accessing network resources.

  51. A parallel Acorn software product called TCP/IP Protocol
  52. Suite enables a RISC OS computer to talk to a UNIX computer
  53. over AUN.  This is likely to be of particular benefit to
  54. higher education where TCP/IP and Ethernet networks are
  55. commonplace.

  57. Acorn's Marketing Director, Mike O'Riordan stressed the cost
  58. effectiveness of Acorn's Universal Networking package. "AUN
  59. protects existing user investments due to its compatibility
  60. with existing networks and its future proofing for tomorrow. 
  61. All of this adds up to a cost effective and efficient
  62. network offering which is ideal for schools, universities
  63. and businesses."

  67. requirements." he added.

  69. The Acorn Universal Networking product pack which contains
  70. site software and a new release of Level 4 FileServer costs
  71. #399 ex VAT.

  73. In addition, the AUN interfaces are clearly defined
  74. allowing third party products to be incorporated into an
  75. overall AUN strategy.  This ensures compatibility and
  76. coexistence between products from different manufacturers.
