- Oh, no. There's no prohibition against either sharing a room or staying
- with a friend or relative. But in the first case there's no incentive to
- do so, and in the second case there's actually a dis-incentive, as they
- take away much (if not all?) of your travel allowance. Wanting people to
- share cars is somewhat common, but the government wanting people to share
- rooms is pretty rare, from those I've talked to.
-
- But on to THE MAIN POINT (as far as USENIX is probably concerned): It
- doesn't make any difference with respect to the total room count whether
- I share someone else's room at the official conference, "El Grando Inn" or
- have my own room 4 blocks away at the "Ho Hum Lodge." (unless the
- prospecive sharee has to move out of the the Inn, because he just couldn't
- find another sharer, but I doubt that that possible secondary effect is
- really significant)
-
- While I'm at a conference, I'm either doing conference things or sleeping--
- probably not anything much else. I almost expect to get a little sick
- at these events, since people from around the country (or world) are all
- concentrated at close quarters sharing germs. I remember at the Anaheim
- USENIX there was an especially large amount of coughing & sneezing going
- on. I find getting good sleep very important to keeping my resistance up,
- so while a fancy room is not especially important to me, a private one is.
-
- I do like to be within walking distance, though, so if the "Ho Hum Lodge"
- turns out to be 3 miles away, I would probably even choose to stay at the
- "Armpit Hotel" across the street, as I did in San Antonio. That (actually
- it was the "Downtowner Motel") was convenient and economical. The TV didn't
- work to well, but all I really wanted to catch was a little news. I wish
- I'd known it was there ahead of time, though, since I could have skipped
- the rent-a-car entirely & just taken a cab to & from the airport.
