  22. VMS NEWS v1.24 is now available to the net...
  23.  
  24. VMS NEWS is a VAX/VMS full screen orientated NEWSreader supporting the
  25. following network (TCP/IP) implementations:
  26.   * CMU/tek
  27.   * EXOS              (never tested, no site with it available)
  28.   * MultiNet
  29.   * Process Software
  30.   * UCX               (1.x and 2.0 [DEC TCP/IP])
  31.   * Wollongong
  32.   * DECnet object     (tested the one of ANU NEWS 6.0.6)

  34. The client supports various display methods:
  35.   * Numbered  to just show the articles in order they came in
  36.   * Subject   to display the articles sorted by subject line
  37.   * Threaded  to display the articles sorted by threads (e.g. references)
  38. In all cases, VMS NEWS offers a window where you can scroll around to select
  39. the requested newsgroup or article.

  41. Supported callable editors:
  42.   * TECO (g'd old one)
  43.   * EDT
  44.   * EVE (TPU section)
  45.   * EVE (LSEDIT section)

  47. The command handling is VMSlike (DCL style). The display uses SMG$ routines
  48. and is written for terminal usage (no X-Window support - I think that this is
  49. not needed). The POST command should check for all possible problems that might
  50. occur when a new user starts experimentation with it :-). A special "noscreen"
  51. mode for BATCHes is also included. This allows programming of handlers to
  52. save automatically parts of newsgroups etc.

  54. *Grin* Not to forget - VMS NEWS is VMSlike - not UNIXlike - so there are no
  55. compatibility modes to rn or any special handlings for native unix users :-).
  56. The only reminder to rn is a possible conversion of rn-style register files
  57. to VMS NEWS register files (that use much less disk space).
  58. To be really VMSlike, there are HELP, MAIL and PRINT facilities included.

  68. I offer ONLY the source (that is written entirely in VAX C) and NO executables.
  69. I think sources are better for network software because they avoid trouble with
  70. different libraries of different TCP/IP implementations. The pure execuables
  71. might lead some sysop's to think of traps and hacks.
