- As many researchers know, prospective studies are very expensive to conduct.
- One potential statistical technique for evaluation directional relationship is
- covariance structural modeling (CSM). Although I know of no study that has
- used CSM on large n cross-sectional data (if anyone knows of such studies
- please let me know), such studies may shed more light on
- the issue of "causality" between marital status and mortality/health. I do
- think, however, that their are important theoretical reasons for suggesting a
- causal relationship. For example, the data on social support and health are
- relevant, as well as research on stress because some have argued that
- loneliless in itself is a stressor with deleterious effects. Overall, I am
- impressed with the consistency in the body of research on marital status and
- health.
