- Gee... youse guys have to stop reading those Jersey press releases.
- When the big controversy of who owns it came up (around the time New
- York changed license plates), the basis for ownership went back to the
- maps kept by the US Geological Survey. These maps have shown both
- Liberty and Ellis Islands as part of New York City. In fact, up until
- the controversy, New York was collecting sales taxes on good sold on
- Liberty Island.
-
- When the controversy hit, New Jersey was not making any money from
- Liberty Island. With Ellis Island opening and the then proposed ferry
- from Liberty State Park, New Jersey took this oppotunity to make a claim
- on both islands. The net results was that there would be a "sharing"
- of the islands and the revnues by both states. Neither Island is
- considered part of either state as a result of the compromise (according
- to USGS maps). However, both Islands are served by New York Telephone,
- the New York City water supply, and if a fire should unfortunatly break
- out, the New York City fire department will be the first called after
- the Coast Guard from Govenor's Island (other general services are
- supplied by the National Parks Service). HOWEVER, the quarters used by
- Parks Service personnel assigned to both landmarks have been moved from
- Staten Island to New Jersey. Waste disposal (both trash and septic
- tank) is handled by a New Jersey company and disposed of in New Jersey.
-
- Drink the water and, when you are finished, leave it in New Jersey.
- (make [in]appropriate comments as you wish!! :-)
