- I decided I'd had enough of living with Ultrix's unsatisfactory man, and
- as the question of replacements is certainly a FAQ for this group, checked
- Win Treece's FAQ-list for current recommendations. I was surprised to
- find no mention of it in the most recent issue I could find (in my archive
- -- the current issue appears to have expired).
-
- I will happily coordinate a summary for submission to Win as an addition
- to the list. My archive has revealed (and I will be evaluating) the
- following possibilities:
- 1. convex.com:/pub/perl/scripts/man.shar.Z
- A perl script replacement from Tom Christiansen
- 2. decuac.dec.com:/pub/sources/bsd-man.tar.Z
- Marcus Ranum's port of bsd tar, minus bugs
- 3. ugle.unit.no:/pub/unix/utils/woman.shar
- C code replacement with a sharp line in cute names!
-
- My rake around the archives also revealed the following quotation from
- Jonathan Lennox, jml12@cunixa.cc.columbia.edu :
- >nelson@reed.edu (Nelson Minar) mentioned that on their Ultrix system
- >they've replaced their man with something written by John W. Eaton
- >(jwe@che.utexas.edu) but my ping didn't recognize this address and I
- >didn't bother looking into this.
-
- From the accompanying comments, I guess that 1. and 2. are likely to be
- the solutions most recommended. If you would like to mail me additional
- recommendations or brickbats, I'll put a contribution together.
