- At a user group meeting in Toronto last month, I asked about the
- differences between the SMC and 3COM boards. The following comments came
- out:

- - A number of people who had used both, agreed that the 3COM boards
- performed noticably better than their SMC/WD counterparts, but are
- more expensive;

- - Since SMC took over WD's Ethernet cards, they have made some
- improvements, but these improvements can break drivers which were
- designed only for the WD cards. Apparently if you use the drivers
- supplied on-disk with the boards, it works fine on most Intel-based
- UNIX products.
