  30. I'm sorry, but I can see Jerry's point. There are a lot of newsgroups
  31. designed for source postings. Sites which want to accept/reject source
  32. postings can do so by tailoring their newsfeeds to accept/reject source
  33. groups. Posting FAS to this group thwarts that mechanism.

  35. On the other hand, some sites (including mine) have software that
  36. automatically scans source groups and archives their contents. Since
  37. the software doesn't have this group flagged as a sources group, it's
  38. going to miss the posting of FAS.

  40. So posting sources here offers a double disadvantage. It frustrates
  41. those who explicitly do not want source postings, as well as those who
  42. would automatically process (in some manner) *all* source postings.

  44. The issue is not at all one of the utility or value of FAS. Posting a
  45. message here saying "I've just posted so-and-so to foo.sources, and it's
  46. available for anon ftp from whatever.site.com", is unquestionably a better
  47. route to go. It's the route Roe went with SAS. This method of releasing
  48. source doesn't inconvenience those who want sources, and it doesn't
  49. inconvenience those who don't.

  53. Was it bad netiquette and sub-optimal? Yes, but no worse than Jerry's
  54. and John's stooping to personal insults to make their points.
