  18. We've been using BudTool for a couple of months now. We chose it
  19. because we thought it the best to supply our needs.

  21. This is what we wanted:

  23.     1) standard UNIX utilities for tape writing (dump)
  24.     2) it should be able to backup all our machines (Sun,
  25.        DECstation, HP, SGI)
  26.     3) unattended operation
  27.     4) it should work on X (openwindows)

  29. We bought BudTool with a EXB-10i (the smart stacker). We have a
  30. EXB-8500 inside the stacker. We have a Sun 4/370 as a media server. We
  31. have disks in several machines which are not all Suns.

  33. How has it worked? Mostly well. What does not work?
  34.  
  35. It doesn't support ULTRIX the way I thought it would. I can back the
  36. disks up but retrieval won't work. (However, I can restore the files
  37. by hand on media server's disks and then rcp them to the ULTRIX
  38. machine.) Delta Microsystems suggested me trying cpio instead of dump
  39. but I haven't had the time to try it yet.

  41. Neither does it support Sun 386i dumps properly. The dumps are OK
  42. (both dump and retrieval) but the file history doesn't work. (Well,
  43. Delta's folks told me BudTool works OK on every Sun. Apparently 386i
  44. isn't a real Sun... :o)

  46. I haven't tried the dumps for HP and SGI yet.

  48. Am I satisfied with BudTool? Yes.

  50. Would I buy it again? Very likely yes.

  52. (I think BudTool is at its best when used with a stacker. We have to
  53. change the 10 tape box on mondays and tuesdays (0-dumps monthly,
  54. 2-dumps weekly and 4-dumps daily). We are now backing up about 12 GB
  55. of disks...)
