- Does anyone out there know of a good solution for controlling access to
- networked printers?
-
- Specificly, In the School of Architecture and Allied Arts we have a student
- lab with a Tektronix Phaser III PXi color wax-jet printer, a LaserWriter
- Plus and a LaserWriter IIg printer, all on localtalk, that we need better
- control over. The Phaser III is especially a problem, as it is much more
- expensive to print on and is also much slower than the LW Plus and LW II
- series printers. The lab we need to control is rather small, about 15 Mac
- II's. All Macs are on System 7.0. Each Mac on the net in our labs has its
- own hard disk drive, and is connected to the net by LocalTalk or EtherNet.
- We have an extensive localtalk/Ethernet internet on campus with many zones
- already established, on which there are many more networked printers at our
- site and at other sites around the campus. Our site is not using any file
- servers at this time other than System 7.0's file sharing. We do have the
- AppleShare Server 3.0 software, but have not implemented it yet. Physical
- access to the lab is restricted by an always-locked lab door with a
- combination lock on a key box, but we have no way of preventing network
- access.
-
- Students are allowed to use the Phaser for color output that is related to
- class work, but they are not supposed to do massive amounts of printing on
- it. They are supposed to use the LW IIg or LW Plus for the rest of their
- work, including all B&W output. The problem we are having is with students
- who are printing plain text, black & white documents such as term papers.
- The LaserWriters get jammed, or have a backlog of printing, and the
- students route their term paper to the Phaser III color printer instead of
- waiting. Talk about a waste of resources! They also occasionally route
- printing to other laser printers in staff or faculty offices, where they
- are not supposed to be printing at all.
-
- The key points we are seeking in a solution are as follows:
- --- Restricting access to faculty/staff printers so the employees can print
- on them, but the students can't. Faculty/staff must retain printer and
- server access from their offices, or from the labs, over the net.
- --- Accounting for printing done on the Phaser III, so that we can identify
- who is exceeding a reasonable amount of class-related printing and bill
- that individual (or class) accordingly for excessive materials used. Normal
- amounts of printing for class-related work is done at no charge.
-
- Please respond via e-mail at the address below. I will post a summary to
- this board later with the best suggestions that I receive.
-
- Thank you for your time and assistance,
