  13. Both the 8250 and the 16650 have an 8 bit data path. The fact that the
  14. 16650 has an 16 byte FIFO just supports this: the FIFO is 8 bits ( one
  15. byte ) wide 8^). Serial interfaces on PCs ( or anything else using
  16. ASCII ) are inherently 8 bits wide at the bus.
