- The story I've heard is that some Quantum drives from this era (1989
- is at the tail end) had a "stiction" problem similar to that which
- plagues Seagate ST251N drives. Too much lubricant was applied to the
- disk surfaces during assembly. This lubricant normally helps protect
- the platters from minor debris and potential head crashes. As time
- goes on, the spin of the platters plus head movement pushes the excess
- lubricant to the outsides of the platters. On powerdown, the heads
- come to rest in the parking zone on the outer tracks, in the excess.
- That can cause the drive heads to literally stick to the platters.
-
- On Seagates, the head actuators can't supply enough force to break
- them free and a safety interlock prevents the platter motor from
- spinning up. Quantums may have a similar interlock. Stiction won't
- appear as long as the drive is running; there won't be any problems.
- Only after the drive is powered-down/parked.
-
- After Apple got stuck with several tens of thousands of drives with
- this problem, Quantum installed new PROMs that moves the head back and
- forth after sitting idle for several seconds to redistribute the
- lubricant. That's why new Quantums occassionaly make head-seek sounds
- while they're idle without the drive activity light flashing. It
- seems to work as I have not heard of a single stiction report with
- Quantums since the new PROM. My two Quantums are running great after
- 15 months on use on one.
-
- For stiction-problem Quantums and Seagates, twisting the spindle will
- usually free the heads enough to enough the drive to spin-up. Banging,
- as you discovered, might work too. For a more permanent fix, try
- calling Quantum. They might be able to send you a new PROM. Other
- than that, the only permanent fix is to replace the platters. Good luck!
