- Something else nobody seems to have mentioned - differences between
- different speeds of CPUs aren't always just that they failed the higher
- speed test. Increasing the operating speed of something as complex as a CPU
- isn't just a matter of heat dissipation; sometimes the logic itself, or the
- materials used, must be changed. This probably isn't the case with the 16
- Mhz and 25 Mhz versions of the '030, but I'll bet there's quite a difference
- in the manufacturing process of a 16 Mhz and a 50 Mhz '030...
-
- If nothing else, the casing would need to be designed to dissipate (or
- tolerate) more heat. Most Motorola CPUs will run pretty well at up to 10%
- above their rated speed. If you can keep them cool, with say a fan right on
- top of them, you can probably run them considerably higher. And, as has
- been pointed out, some will run faster anyway. But as has also been pointed
- out, there are no guarantees, and if you try it, the first sign of trouble
- might just be your CPU frying itself rather than just crashing...
