Check your graphics-books before you answer a question like that.
Sorry. But you have to know what the whole rucuss is about.
POV,Ray-dance,QRT,... are all ray-tracers that are designed to render a
particular way.
Renderman is different in that you can actually program it to handle
shadows and light differently. If you have ever seen commercials like
the "listerine" commercials of the bottle which sword-fights
and flys through jungles, boxes, etc. That was all done using
Renderman and a modeling program. Also you can find these
renderings in the Lifesavers HOLES commercials.
Most every animation that PIXAR has created was done using Renderman,
becuase they were the ones who wrote Renderman.
You may have seen these films all over the place, but never knew
what program they were done on. Lightwave isn't any competition
for Renderman, rendering-wise. Just to give you an idea!!
Take a journey through a edition of "Computer Graphics World"
or "Videography" and you might find some images to look
at. The sick thing is the MAC's and PC's have Renderman
and hardly any of the users for the PC (specifically)
are as enthusiastic about ray-tracings as the Amiga users.
And still the PC's get the software.
Renderman is pretty slow, however, but the Images should make up for this!!
The guy who wrote Renderman is the same guy who created the film
clip showing the effect of the Genisis "Bomb" on
a dead-moon, for StarTrek II "Wrath of Khan."
I think Steve Jobs owns part of Pixar (or all) but last I heard the
renderman software is no longer a part of Pixar, or maybe
mixed up. ;-) Pixar also makes monitors, at least I'm sure of that.
