I would!
I have seen the type of stuff that can be done with Renderman and it impresses
me no end. I looked at a demo of PoV today, got some pictures before
that claimed to use PoV but that may have been incorrect.
After looking at an example that took 1.5 days, I abandoned PoV.
I tried out Rayshade 4.0 for the Amiga, which did well.
My machine is clearly not as fast as the MIPS R2000 at school,
but the previewed image at 200x200 10-20 primitives (with some bump maps)
took about 18 minutes. It is pretty slow, but a 68040 could probably
do that in 4 minutes. Equally, it could render a 640x640 image
in about 20 minutes, I suspect. Actual ray-tracing would take a while,
but I haven't used the actual ray-tracing very much. I have one file
that would take any Amiga here at least a week, but the final product
can be found in an Image called "hall7.jpg" on various FTP-sites.
I plan to render more becuase they are neat to look at. ;-) (Very
Dick and Jane, huh!!)
I'd say the R2000 is about twice as fast as a 68040, running at 25mhz.
I think it is easier/faster to run programs on mainframes, but
not everyone has a mainframe 8-|.
How fast is your friend's Renderman-Emulator???
I guess speed doesn't matter all that much. Support is the best part.
