- Well, I could not figure out the reason for my shutdown problems.
- I gave up and reinstalled the main system parts again.

- Maybe, chkdsk /f:3 would have helped. At that time I didn't know how
- to run chkdsk from my 'handmade' boot disk. I forgot to copy a DLL from
- the installation disk 2 (from which chkdsk runs properly - german version -).

- I remember some objects in folders that were marked as running, but
- had no coressponding window in the window list. This *might* have been
- the problem. Apps that don't let the shutdown procedure kill them will
- disable the shutdown (pmfree is one of them).

- So, if you have no entries except the desktop window in the window list and
- chkdsk /f:3 run from a diskette will not help, I can only recommend to
- backup the .ini files (you never know) and reinstall the system.
