Social Studies Idea #4
Time Lines
Objective:
The students will make time lines depicting the discovery
dates of various fruits and vegetables.
Rationale:
The "5 A Day Adventures" section, Fruits and Vegetables Speak
Up provides information about how long certain fruits and
vegetables have been grown in particular areas throughout the
world. Students may transfer this information to a time line
to see the relative standing of fruits and vegetables in terms
of discovery dates.
Materials:
Sheets of butcher or bulletin board paper
Markers or colored pencils
Meter sticks (for drawing time lines)
'Time Line Guide' sheet
Introduction:
* If the students have not been introduced to the concept
of a time line, it may be beneficial to create one as a
class. This time line can depict historical events,
scheduled school day events, student birthdays, etc.
* The chalkboard, butcher paper, and bulletin board paper
are good for displaying time lines.
Group/Individual Activity:
* Have students explore the "5 A Day Adventures" section,
Fruits and Vegetables Speak Up for the needed
information. The teacher may direct the search in
various ways, including
- time frame in which the fruit or vegetable was first
grown
- particular year a fruit or vegetable was brought to
the United States
* A summary of this information is provided for the teacher
on the 'Time Line Guide' sheet.
* Illustrated time lines make colorful and interesting
displays!
Related Activities:
* Students may graph the information from their time lines.
* Have students create math problems using the information
on the timeline.
