Mrs. Tainer was born Juliana O'Donnell, and was a colonist on Omicron Theta during the same period that Dr. Noonien Soong resided there in the 2330s. Juliana and Soong fell in love, and over the objections of Juliana's mother, secretly married on a trip to Mavala IV. Juliana assisted Soong in the development and construction of five positronic androids, the last two being Lore and Data. Juliana considered each of the androids as her children; the failure of the first four was very painful for her. The Soongs were nearing the final phases of Data's programming when Omicron Theta was attacked by the Crystalline Entity. Fearing that Data would behave as his predecessor, Lore, Juliana persuaded Soong to leave the android behind as they fled the Entity. The Soongs were able to travel as far as Terlina III, but Juliana had been injured by the Entity and became comatose. Unable to stand the thought of losing her, Soong created an extremely advanced android in her image, and implanted the android with her memories. Following the human Juliana's death, Soong activated this new android. This android believed herself to be Juliana Soong and believed that she had just recovered from a serious accident. Soong went to great lengths to assure that the android Juliana would not discover her true nature. He designed a feedback processor which sent out a false biosignal to fool sensor devices. He also programmed the android to shut down in the event her design was discovered, so she would not discover the truth herself. For a time, Soong and his android creation were happy. But Juliana became unhappy with her life on Terlina III; eventually she left the planet and Soong. Sometime later Juliana met and married Dr. Pran Tainer, an Atrean geologist. Juliana followed her son, Data, and his accomplishments until she was finally able to reunite with him at Atrea IV in 2370. Though Juliana's true nature was discovered by Data, he honored Soong's wishes and allowed Juliana to live out the remainder of her days believing she was human. (“Inheritance” [TNG]). Life on Camor V proved difficult, and Jason was arrested by local authorities for several minor offenses. In 2370, former DaiMon Bok surreptitiously resequenced Jason's DNA to make it appear that Jason was the son of Enterprise -D captain Jean-Luc Picard, who had in fact, had an affair with Jason's mother in 2346. Bok planned to let Picard believe that he had a son, then planned to kill this long-lost offspring. Bok hoped this would gain revenge against Picard for Picard's role in the death of Bok's son in the Battle of Maxia in 2355. As a result of Bok's genetic tampering, Jason developed Forrester Trent Syndrome, a treatable condition that provided evidence of Bok's plot. Bok's plan failed and Jason returned to Camor V, finding not a father but perhaps a new friend. (“Bloodlines” [TNG]).

Miranda was born on New Gaul around 2320 and trained as a botanist. She had a brief but intense romantic relationship with Jean-Luc Picard in 2346 and although the couple planned to stay in touch, they never saw each other again. In 2347, Miranda had a son, Jason, by an unnamed Starfleet officer; the boy never learning the true identity of his father. In 2358, Miranda and her ten year old child moved to Camor V where she cared for orphans left homeless from the Cardassian war. Although a difficult life, Miranda enjoyed tending crops and teaching the orphans to read and survive. Her untimely death came at the hands of two men on the streets of Camor V as they killed her for the food she was carrying. (“Bloodlines” [TNG]). We suspect that an early draft of “Bloodlines” may have cast Miranda as a member of Picard's crew aboard the Stargazer, since his weapons officer aboard that ship (seen in “The Battle” [TNG]) was named Vigo. We speculate that as the story was developed, the Stargazer connection was dropped, but the character name was not changed.

He was taken to sickbay, where an attempt was made to erase his memory of what he had seen. But due to the unusual physiology of his neural system, his short term memory remained intact. Captain Picard offered Vorin the choice of returning to his people, where he would be unable to tell them of the things he had seen, or remaining with the crew of the Enterprise -D.
