~1:[2,#B],14:[2,#B],78:[1,#I],97:[1,#I]@1quantum fissure@2Fixed point in the space-time continuum, essentially a keyhole into other quantum realities. Returning from shore leave by shuttlecraft in 2370, Worf encountered such a quantum fissure. When the shuttle intersected the fissure, its warp engines caused a break in the barriers between realities and allowed Worf to pass from one quantum reality to the next. When the fissure was discovered and was in the process of being analyzed, a power surge on board the Enterprise -D caused the fissure to destablize and allowed other realities to intrude into Worf's current location. Some 285,000 Enterprise -Ds, each representing a different quantum reality, were observed coming through the fissure. (“Parallels” [TNG]).
~1: [2, #b], 35: [1, #b]@1quantum flux@2State of dimensional instability, or continual change. Objects in a state of quantum flux are unable to remain stable in one quantum reality. In 2370, following an encounter with a quantum fissure, Worf was thrown into a state of quantum flux, and began shifting from one quantum reality to the next, until the flux could be detected and repaired. (“Parallels” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],48:[2,#B],73:[36,#I]@1quantum reality@2One of an infinite number of possible universes or realities that exist side by side along the space-time continuum. Every occurrence and outcome that could exist does exist in a different quantum reality, realities that become increasingly divergent. In 2370, following an exposure to a quantum fissure, Worf experienced several such quantum realities, until his “shifting” could be corrected and he could be returned to his proper reality. (“Parallels” [TNG]). This idea of multiple realities is based on Dr. Richard Feynman's theory of “sum over histories”, where a particle would not have a single history or path in space-time, but would instead follow every possible path.
~1:[2,#B],16:[2,#B]@1quantum signature@2A unique characteristic that marks all matter in the universe for a given quantum reality. All matter in each universe resonates in a specific frequency at the quantum level. That signature is constant and cannot be changed by any known process. In 2370, an alternate Commander Data was able to determine that Worf's quantum signature was not native to the reality he was currently inhabiting. This discovery led to the solution for Worf's “shifting” through realities. (“Parallels” [TNG]).

Following Felisa's death, Quint warned Beverly to rid herself of her grandmother's house and most particularly the Howard family candle, which Ned felt summoned the family ghost. Quint felt the ghost had been a curse on the Howard family for generations. He was killed at the weather control substation, attempting to disable the weather control net. Dr. Crusher determined that he had been killed by the same anaphasic energy that Ronin possessed. (“Sub Rosa” [TNG]).
~1:[2,#B],12:[1,#B],87:[2,#B]@1Rabal, Dr.@2(Michael Corbett). Hekaran scientist. Rabal worked with his sister, Serova, on her theory that the cumulative effects of warp drive was damaging the fabric of space. He said it took him four years of study to understand the theoretical models on which her theories were based. By 2370, he was convinced that she was correct and joined her in her attempt to gain attention for her findings. After his sister's death, Rabal was left to deal with the legacy his sister had created; a subspace rift that affected the orbit of his homeworld. (“Force of Nature” [TNG]).

In order to combat an outbreak of Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome aboard the Enterprise -D in 2370, Data used the amniotic fluid of Nurse Ogawa's pregnancy as a template for a retrovirus. This retrovirus, once activated, rewrote the DNA of the mutated T-cell which caused the symptoms of the syndrome to abate. (“Genesis” [TNG]). While this retrovirus was a good one, most of them are associated with cancers, mostly in animals. There is also some research linking a retrovirus with AIDS.

Following his exposure to a quantum fissure in 2370, Worf's cellular RNA was thrown into a state of flux, which extended to the subatomic level. This was the first clue to the nature of Worf's quantum disassociation; essentially he was in the wrong quantum reality. (“Parallels” [TNG]).

The comet was found to have originated in the D'Arsay system, over 87 million years before its encounter with the Enterprise -D. Initial sensor readings found the comet to be composed of an outer shell of gaseous hydrogen and helium over an icy mantle. The interior of the comet was found to contain the D'Arsay archive. ~1:[1,#B],4:[2,#B],59:[2,#B],129:[3,#B]@1Ronin@2(Duncan Regehr). Anaphasic life-form who appeared in human form as a 34 year old man. Ronin claimed to have been born in 1647, in Glasgow, Scotland. He originally found a suitable host with Jessel Howard, one of Beverly Crusher's ancestors. Ronin then joined with each successive female member of the Howard line, until his final relationship with Felisa Howard. Those women whom Ronin had joined with manifested bright green eyes as a side-effect of his presence. When Felisa died in 2370, Ronin attempted to join with Beverly. He began exhibiting a hypnotic control over her, enticing her to resign from Starfleet. When Beverly's crewmates attempted to dissuade her, Ronin began attacking them. Beverly was forced to kill him, in order to protect her friends. (“Sub Rosa” [TNG]).SEE: Howard Family candle.

During their childhood, Nikolai and Worf frequently disagreed, and their personalities clashed well into their adulthood. Nikolai entered Starfleet Academy with Worf in 2357, but found the atmosphere too restrictive and left the Academy at the end of his first year. Nikolai would later become a scientist and cultural observer. In 2370, he was assigned to planet Boraal II. Nikolai overstepped the role of an observer, and became personally involved with the village he was assigned to study. He was intimate with one of the Boraalans, Dobara, and they were expecting their first child. During that year, severe plasmonic reactions began destroying the planet's atmosphere. Rozhenko sent a distress call, and while waiting for help to arrive, and protected the villagers with an energy shield from his observation post, a violation of the Prime Directive. The Starship Enterprise -D responded to Rozhenko's call, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard refused to erect an atmospheric shield to protect the village, citing Prime Directive considerations. Rozhenko then surreptitiously transported the Boraalan villagers into a holodeck representation of their encampment, forcing Captain Picard to participate in a plan in which the Boraal villagers were maintained in a holographic simulation until they were beamed down to a new planetary home. After the entire Boraalan village was successfully transported to the surface of Vacca VI, Nikolai decided to remain with the village and Dobara. He became the village's new chronicle, taking Vorin's place. (“Homeward” [TNG]). Nikolai's existence and his time at Starfleet Academy was first alluded to in “Heart of Glory” (TNG).

Hekaran scientist who, in 2366, submitted a report to the Federation Science Council theorizing that repeated and prolonged use of warp travel in the Hekaras Corridor was damaging the very fabric of space. The Council found insufficient evidence to back up her theory. She continued to work on her research, and by 2370, she, along with her brother, Rabal, felt they had enough data to finally prove her theories. She was unwilling to wait for the year it would take for the Federation Science Council to come a review her claims. She and Rabal chose instead to booby-trap the Hekaras Corridor with verteron mines, theorizing that if the mines disabled enough ships, Starfleet would send a vessel to investigate. The Enterprise -D was dispatched and it too became disabled. Captain Jean-Luc Picard reviewed her research and agreed to recommend Serova's work to the Science Council. Serova remained impatient. Determined to demonstrate her theory, she initiated a warp core breach of her ship, causing a subspace rupture in the Hekaras Corridor. Serova was killed proving her theory.
