  12. For those who may not have heard the news yet, Apple today announced that
  13. it plans to extend "hard cost" benefits (i.e. health benefits) to the
  14. same-sex domestic partners of its U.S. employees starting July 1, 1993.

  16. Apple extended "soft cost" benefits (use of the fitness center, bereavement
  17. leave, etc.) to domestic partners of employees in July, 1992, but hesitated
  18. to go any further until now.

  20. John Sculley's announcement today is *very* welcome news, and more details on
  21. what all of this means to Apple employees will be available during the
  22. open enrollment period in April.
