- I have this problem, too (also on an SLV-696HF, which I just bought).
- This popping doesn't happen on the linear tracks.
-
- Occasionally it's bad enough that the machine momentarily switches
- to the linear tracks (this is characterized by a sudden burst of hiss,
- given the poor SNR of that track combined with the lack of Dolby noise
- reduction on the machine; also, the momentary absence of the "stereo"
- indicator confirms this).
-
- I think it's a problem with tape dropouts.
-
- Pardon my ignorance; I'm not certain how the hi-fi recording is done,
- but my suspicion is that it's either a compansion scheme or some sort
- of frequency modulation or both. Either would lead to some strange artifacts
- if the signal were completely lost, for example, during a dropout.
-
- I've never seen either of the video problems you've mentioned, though.
- The picture is very good, as a matter of fact.
-
- Overall, with the exception of the unfortunate lack of audio input
- level controls, I'm very happy with this machine.
-
- Not that it's really an issue, but is there any reason why the machine
- can't display the time counter during special effects modes (particularly
- while the tape is paused)?
