- All engines nowadays will run with each other. You can control all engines
- in the consist from any one of the engines, normally the lead engine.
- That way, they only need one engineer for all engines(unlike the old steam
- era, when using 2 engines meant having 2 engineers and 2 fireman, one for
- each engine). Engines can also run either direction (long hood or short hood
- forward), but the preferred way (on most RRs) is to have the short nose
- to the front. The reason they have them facing both directions is for
- convenience. When the engine set gets to its destination, it doesn't have to
- be turned to go back the other direction. If they have an engine facing
- the front and one facing the back, they can just switch them around on
- sidings. If they are all facing the same direction, they would need to
- turn them around, requiring either a turntable, or a wye track.
- (Although some RR's turn the engines anyway. The CP Rail/Soo Line runthroughs
- in Michigan via CSX usually turn the engines when they get to Chicago. The
- same engine is leading going as it is coming back, usually with all the same
- engines in the consist too)
-
- Hope this doesn't sound too confusing...
