-
- The Blue Ridge Parkway begins, in the south, on the eastern side of the
- Great Smokey Mountain National Park (slightly south of the line between
- Knoxville, Tennessee, and Asheville, North Carolina). It runs NNE
- along the western North Carolina border, into Virginia, where it
- continues on a NNE route, a few miles west of I-81. According to my
- map, it seems to change names at Waynesboro, Virginia (west of
- Charlottesville), and becomes Skyline Drive. It ends just south of
- Winchester, Virginia.
-
- The route is absolutely beautiful. The road is well maintained, and
- travels almost exclusively through National Forests or National Parks.
- The Appalachian Mountains experience four distinct seasons, and offer
- something different all times of the year. For a motorcycle trip, I
- wouldn't recommend winter. Late summer is probably the busiest season,
- with the most traffic.
-
- Try to avoid weekends, particularly in or near the National Parks.
- Speed limit is too low, and is rigidly enforced. The cops that patrol
- it are complete idiots (on a group ride last summer, a cop saw 2 bikes
- going the other way, pulled across both lanes and made a 3-point turn
- IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD to turn around and go after them. the bikers
- following nearly T-boned him).
-
- If you plan to travel it near the first of June, tune in here for info
- on the Second Annual DoD Right Coast Ride, which is rumored to be in
- West Virgina near then.
