- I love reading these Bios.
-
- I'm Janet Levy. I work for AT&T Network Systems and am currently
- half-leasing a cute quarter horse/mix named Troy who is reputed to be
- an event horse but is currently being a "horse of pleasure".
-
- I've been a horse lover since birth as far as I can recall. I rode
- my first horse on Mackinac Island at age 7. Like many others, my family
- has been waiting for 40 years for me to outgrow this addiction. I'm
- also fairly talented in drawing and sculpting horses.
-
- Growing up in Chicago, my Mom trucked me to lessons (Saddleseat in those
- days). In later years, I rode busses to livery stables to ride and would
- get my father to lease a horse for me for a month every summer.
- I took huntseat lessons while in college and learned some jumping
- but never went far with that. After getting my BA in Biology
- (specialized in Animal Behavior), I went to grad school for a Ph.D.
- I also took my first dressage lessons. Dressage was almost unknown
- in the Midwest back then (1970).
-
- I fell in love with one summer lease horse, Joshua, the great buckskin
- wonderhorse, but couldn't buy him since I was starting graduate
- school. I went to Puerto Rico for a year to study play behavior in
- monkeys, and while there I owned a little Paso stud horse named Coqui.
- When I returned to Chicago, I checked ads for a lease and through divine
- intervention (I really believe this) I got the chance to half-lease Joshua
- with his owner; this relationship lasted six years. Joshua and I rode trails,
- learned some dressage, both learned driving and won ribbons for that, and
- specialized in trail class and won many trophies. As I finished
- grad school (in Biology), I tried to buy Josh but his stinky owner
- wouldn't sell. The month after I got my first REAL job (switching
- to Computer Science), I bought my own horse, the App, Merlin. I owned
- Merlin for ten years. He was a super mover but didn't really like
- dressage that much; he taught me to be a much better rider since
- he needed a subtle rider - you had to make him think everything was
- his own idea. He loved being driven and we did well at that. He died
- tragically of poisoning three years ago.
-
- Since then I have been leasing - hesitant to take on the financial
- burden of ownership again, although I almost bought a Lippizan mare
- last year. My interests are classical dressage and driving, and
- my favorite horse breed is the Lipizzan. I believe Joshua was a Lipizzan
- in buckskin clothing. I'm starting my lease horse in harness this winter.
-
- I'm an animal lover and own a Wheaten terrier, Casey, three
- cats (Pumpkin, BigKitty, and Nokomis), a mini-lop BoomBoom, 16
- English budgies, 1 cockatiel, and a box turtle (which I've had for
- 25 years).
