- I had posted a month ago about my '83 Jetta's oil consumption. If any of
- you remember, it was blowing oil down the breather tube and into the air
- cleaner box at a rate of 1qt/300mi.
-
- Well, I finally got a chance to pull off the valve cover, and the inside
- of the cover at the right, where the oil screen/baffle/strainer is, was
- all gunked up. Some of you had suggested to look for this, and to NOT
- try and clean the strainer. I looked at some of the valve covers my
- roommate had (he has an '81 'rocco), and they were also pretty gunked,
- as well as some from a junk yard. So, I bit the bullet and bought a new
- cover from the local VW dealer ($105, OUCH!!). A friend had a shim kit,
- so we adjusted the valves while we were in there.
- Results? I took the car on a 1000 mi. trip over the weekend, and the car
- got 32mpg and USED NO OIL!!!!!!
- Incredible! 150,000 mi on this car, and it's back to using NO oil. I'm
- pleased!
