- My wife bought one of these new in '74. My sister currently drives it.
- The automatic doesnt't actually shift for you, L is for heavy loads/steep inclines.
- 1 is to be used up to 50mph (you usually only use 1 in the city, and 2 on highways).
- There is a torqueconverter and a clutch, and a vacuum modulator operating the
- clutch. Whenever you move the gear lever, the clutch is disengaged. When in
- gear, the torque converter allows for slippage at a stop in gear (like a
- conventional autobox).
-
- My sister's car now has about 150,000 miles on it, and
- the only work ever done on the gearbox (it has had a few carb problems) was a
- gasket in the vacuum system was replaced at about 3k miles, and a tranny fluid
- hose was replaced at about 130,000. (It will be for sale soon - has some rust
- and dings in it, but the drivetrain all works ok - it is near Seattle).
-
- This version of the stickshift automatic is more rare than it's predecessor with
- the electromagnetic clutch (and more reliable). It is also less common since
- most people avoided it as it had inherited the bad reputation of the electro-magentic
- version! It is pretty fun to drive, but I don't think I would get one as parts
- are getting hard (if you should need them), and the carb has some special
- castings for vacuum associated with the clutch mechanism - makes it a $600 carb!
-
- If you want a good semi-automatic that is alot more fun to drive, get a Citroen
- with Citro-Matic! Or a SAAB 96 with the vacuum operated 'SAXOMAT' clutch! These
- are both more fun to drive since you actually get to shift (the VW just sits in
- gear all the time unless you go on the freeway, where you get to shift once! [1-2]).
