  17. I see that the question is being asked "Why isn't USGS elevation data available

  19. somewhere on the net?".

  23. The Taxpayer Assets Project directed by James Love has been pushing a proposal
  24.  
  25. that would open up the huge volumes of government data that has been collected
  26.  
  27. and cataloged with tax money to on-line access to the general public.

  31. Historicaly, this information has been available only thru private vendors at

  33. inflated prices.  The Information Dissemination Equity Act (IDEA) would
  34.  
  35. establish an online "Window"  to government information thru the Government
  36.  
  37. Printing Office.  This proposal has gained a number of supporters in congress
  38.  
  39. and may become reality.
