- DIGITAL ANNOUNCES DCE DEVELOPER'S KIT
- FOR OpenVMS VAX PLATFORMS
-
-
- Extends interoperability and portability of the OpenVMS operating
- system and facilitates distributed application development
-
-
- MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 26, 1993 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
- today announced the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) for
- OpenVMS VAX platforms, and its intention to deliver DCE on the
- OpenVMS AXP platform later this year. The kit includes a subset
- of the Open Software Foundation's DCE tools, providing application
- developers with the opportunity to design and build distributed
- applications that can work on other systems as well.
-
- "The DCE is rapidly becoming the de facto standard that
- supports client/server computing in multivendor office
- environments," stated John Adams, vice president of Digital's Open
- Network Systems. "Combined with the feature-rich OpenVMS offering,
- DCE is the key element of Digital's distributed processing software
- product set; with its significant industry support, DCE is rapidly
- becoming the foundation technology for client/server computing."
-
- The kit provides a subset of the Open Software Foundations'
- DCE, enabling application developers to begin designing and building
- distributed applications, while still using the robust features of
- their current OpenVMS systems. The kit provides customers with
- maximum flexibility for configuring their environment. OpenVMS kit
- components include a Digital DCE Runtime Services Kit and the Digital
- DCE Application Development Kit.
-
- The Runtime Services Kit includes a fully integrated set of
- services that provide applications with essential capabilities
- required to use distributed services. The Application Developer's
- Kit provides a powerful Interface Definition Language (IDL) that
- greatly simplifies the writing of Remote Procedure Calls.
-
- "The beauty of the Digital DCE product set is that it will
- provide users with seamless access to resources, regardless of their
- location on their network, thus extending the interoperability and
- portability of OpenVMS beyond POSIX and XPG3 BASE branding. When
- customer applications are initially developed on OpenVMS, then
- ported to other platforms and then distributed throughout a network,
- true interoperability becomes a reality. The communication
- possibilities become extraordinary," added Adams.
-
- As part of Digital's Open Advantage campaign, Digitals' DCE
- products promote consistent and highly reliable programming. With
- the availability of DCE, the operating system and network perform
- independently yet compatibly with a user's existing environment.
- For example, applications designed via the kit will interoperate
- with applications designed with the DCE Starter Kit for OSF/1
- (available since May, 1992).
-
- Digital's implementation of DCE on OpenVMS will occur in
- phases. Customers can begin ordering the initial kit on March 26,
- 1993, with additional core components on OpenVMS -- Cell Directory
- Services, Distributed Time Services and DCE Security -- available
- over the following eighteen months.
-
- "As Digital rolls out the core DCE products, we will evaluate
- our customers' feedback on needs for Distributed File System (DFS)
- on OpenVMS," noted Rich Kittle, open systems marketing manager for
- Digital. The DCE kit will enable interoperability with Microsoft's
- PC RPC via the PC NSI Proxy Agent, to give users the complete
- implementation of unauthenticated RPC.
-
- Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
