  24.                      DEC OSF/1 OPERATING SYSTEM
  25.                AND DECwindows for MOTIF USER INTERFACE

  28. MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 25, 1993 -- Digital Equipment Corporation 
  29. today announced that its DEC OSF/1 operating system and DECwindows 
  30. for Motif, a graphical user interface, received certification awards 
  31. from the Open Software Foundation (OSF). 
  32.  
  33.      OSF, a non-profit, independent research and development 
  34. organization, presented Digital and seven other vendors with awards 
  35. for meeting OSF certification with recently developed products.  
  36. Other vendors receiving recognition included: IBM, Hewlett-Packard/
  37. Apollo, Hitachi Ltd., Silicon Graphics, Groupe Bull, ASCII 
  38. Corporation, and Intergraph Corporation.  "The OSF technologies have 
  39. been carefully defined and developed with the help and guidance of a 
  40. worldwide consortium of vendors and end-users, not by any single 
  41. vendor," said David Tory, OSF president and CEO.  "More and more 
  42. end-users are requiring non-proprietary solutions.  This is why so 
  43. many companies are adopting OSF technologies as the basis for their 
  44. products, and will strive to obtain OSF certification, as Digital
  45. has done," added Tory.
  46.  
  47.      The OSF charter is to provide technologies for true open 
  48. computing where systems and applications cooperate and work together 
  49. independent of the underlying hardware and operating system. 
  50. Currently, the technologies defined are the OSF/1 operating system, 
  51. Motif user interface, DCE (Distributed Computing Environment) and 
  52. DME (Distributed Management Environment).  Certification tests are 
  53. in place for the OSF/1 operating system and Motif interface.  The 
  54. DCE tests are being finalized now.

  56.      "The OSF standards were developed based on user needs and 
  57. without vendor bias.  They are very comprehensive, encompassing 
  58. other standards such as POSIX and XPG branding from X/Open.  Meeting 
  59. the OSF standards, therefore, is the best proof that products will 
  60. provide true multivendor integration and distributed computing 
  61. capability in a multivendor, multiprotocol environment," said 
  62. William R. Demmer, Vice President, Digital's Computer Systems Group.

  64.      "Digital's approach is to provide the most robust 
  65. implementation of OSF technologies while providing full support for 
  66. System V applications and utilities, said Vickie Farrell, Marketing 
  67. Manager for Digital's UNIX Product Group.  "Imagine not having to 
  68. worry about what operating system to buy.  OSF/1, the UNIX standard, 
  69. integrates all other open system standards while providing a 
  70. complete business and solution environment for commercial and 
  71. technical computing," added Farrell.

  73.      In addition to the OSF standards, DEC OSF/1 V1.2 complies with 
  74. POSIX standards, UNIX System Laboratories (USL) System V Interface 
  75. Definition (SVID) 2 and SVID 3 base and kernel, FIPS 151, and a 
  76. number of others.  DEC OSF/1 also includes the DECwindows for Motif 
  77. graphical user interface.  The OSF/Motif interface is the widely 
  78. acknowledged defacto, workstation user interface standard and provides 
  79. a powerful model for interacting with the operating system using a 
  80. point-and-click metaphor.  When all applications on all platforms 
  81. have the same look and feel, the learning curve is much shorter for 
  82. users.

  84.      "Digital has a strong commitment to providing a true open UNIX 
  85. system through standards compliance.  In fact, no UNIX system on the 
  86. market supports more standards than the DEC OSF/1," added Demmer.

  88.      DEC OSF/1 V1.2 is on schedule to ship in March, 1993. Through 
  89. an early release program, over 500 customers and CSOs (Complementary 
  90. Solution Organizations) who are developing applications for the DEC 
  91. OSF/1 operating system, have received the software on Digital's 
  92. Alpha AXP platform.  "DEC OSF/1 is an important milestone for both 
  93. customers and software developers in the move to open, standards-
  94. based computing," said Nimish Mehta, vice president of Midrange 
  95. Systems at Oracle.  "Oracle has taken a leadership role in the 
  96. adoption of DEC OSF/1 and our development team has been very 
  97. positive about the functionality, performance, and quality of this 
  98. product.  We have witnessed tremendous interest from our customers 
  99. for DEC OSF/1 on Alpha AXP and have accelerated our product 
  100. development schedules to meet the demand," added Mehta.
