- OPEN SOFTWARE FOUNDATION CERTIFIES
- DEC OSF/1 OPERATING SYSTEM
- AND DECwindows for MOTIF USER INTERFACE
-
-
- MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 25, 1993 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
- today announced that its DEC OSF/1 operating system and DECwindows
- for Motif, a graphical user interface, received certification awards
- from the Open Software Foundation (OSF).
-
- OSF, a non-profit, independent research and development
- organization, presented Digital and seven other vendors with awards
- for meeting OSF certification with recently developed products.
- Other vendors receiving recognition included: IBM, Hewlett-Packard/
- Apollo, Hitachi Ltd., Silicon Graphics, Groupe Bull, ASCII
- Corporation, and Intergraph Corporation. "The OSF technologies have
- been carefully defined and developed with the help and guidance of a
- worldwide consortium of vendors and end-users, not by any single
- vendor," said David Tory, OSF president and CEO. "More and more
- end-users are requiring non-proprietary solutions. This is why so
- many companies are adopting OSF technologies as the basis for their
- products, and will strive to obtain OSF certification, as Digital
- has done," added Tory.
-
- The OSF charter is to provide technologies for true open
- computing where systems and applications cooperate and work together
- independent of the underlying hardware and operating system.
- Currently, the technologies defined are the OSF/1 operating system,
- Motif user interface, DCE (Distributed Computing Environment) and
- DME (Distributed Management Environment). Certification tests are
- in place for the OSF/1 operating system and Motif interface. The
- DCE tests are being finalized now.
-
- "The OSF standards were developed based on user needs and
- without vendor bias. They are very comprehensive, encompassing
- other standards such as POSIX and XPG branding from X/Open. Meeting
- the OSF standards, therefore, is the best proof that products will
- provide true multivendor integration and distributed computing
- capability in a multivendor, multiprotocol environment," said
- William R. Demmer, Vice President, Digital's Computer Systems Group.
-
- "Digital's approach is to provide the most robust
- implementation of OSF technologies while providing full support for
- System V applications and utilities, said Vickie Farrell, Marketing
- Manager for Digital's UNIX Product Group. "Imagine not having to
- worry about what operating system to buy. OSF/1, the UNIX standard,
- integrates all other open system standards while providing a
- complete business and solution environment for commercial and
- technical computing," added Farrell.
-
- In addition to the OSF standards, DEC OSF/1 V1.2 complies with
- POSIX standards, UNIX System Laboratories (USL) System V Interface
- Definition (SVID) 2 and SVID 3 base and kernel, FIPS 151, and a
- number of others. DEC OSF/1 also includes the DECwindows for Motif
- graphical user interface. The OSF/Motif interface is the widely
- acknowledged defacto, workstation user interface standard and provides
- a powerful model for interacting with the operating system using a
- point-and-click metaphor. When all applications on all platforms
- have the same look and feel, the learning curve is much shorter for
- users.
-
- "Digital has a strong commitment to providing a true open UNIX
- system through standards compliance. In fact, no UNIX system on the
- market supports more standards than the DEC OSF/1," added Demmer.
-
- DEC OSF/1 V1.2 is on schedule to ship in March, 1993. Through
- an early release program, over 500 customers and CSOs (Complementary
- Solution Organizations) who are developing applications for the DEC
- OSF/1 operating system, have received the software on Digital's
- Alpha AXP platform. "DEC OSF/1 is an important milestone for both
- customers and software developers in the move to open, standards-
- based computing," said Nimish Mehta, vice president of Midrange
- Systems at Oracle. "Oracle has taken a leadership role in the
- adoption of DEC OSF/1 and our development team has been very
- positive about the functionality, performance, and quality of this
- product. We have witnessed tremendous interest from our customers
- for DEC OSF/1 on Alpha AXP and have accelerated our product
- development schedules to meet the demand," added Mehta.
-
- Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
- Massachusetts, is the leading worldwide supplier of networked
- computer systems, software, and services. The company pioneered and
- leads the industry in interactive, distributed and multivendor
- computing. Digital and its business partners deliver the power to
- use the best integrated solutions - from desktop to data center -
- in open information environments.
