  34. MAYNARD, Mass. -- January 26, 1993 --  Digital Equipment Corporation 
  35. today announced the DECpc 325SL, a sleek, notebook-size portable PC 
  36. with features typically found only on desktop PCs.  These include 
  37. upgradable processor and display screens, removable hard disk drive, 
  38. room for two expansion cards and strong, multi-level security.

  40.      The new DECpc 325SL PC is also lightweight -- just 5.9 pounds 
  41. (2.68 kg) -- and features a long, 6.5 hour battery life.
  42.  
  43.      The new Digital portable comes standard with a 25MHz 386SL 
  44. processor with 64KB cache, 4MB main memory, 80 or 120MB hard drive 
  45. and large, 640 x 480 VGA monochrome or passive matrix color display.  
  46. The unit can be upgraded to a 486SL processor, 20MB of main memory 
  47. and an active-matrix color display.  The DECpc 325SL measures 8.5 x 
  48. 11.5 inches (21.6 x 29.2 cm), is priced from $2,399 to $3,399, 
  49. depending on configuration, and is available immediately.

  51. Advanced Capabilities for Mobile Computing 
  52.  
  53.      The new portable also features advanced capabilities targeted 
  54. to "mobile professionals" -- business travelers, office-to-home 
  55. telecommuters and other users employed in sales or field 
  56. professions.  These include compatibility with PCMCIA Type II 
  57. peripheral cards, removable hard disk drive, and sophisticated 
  58. power management facilities.

  60.      An important new enabling technology for small form-factor PCs, 
  61. PCMCIA (for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) 
  62. is an industry-standard specification for attaching credit-card size 
  63. peripherals -- everything from memory to modems -- to special 
  64. compact sockets.  The new DECpc 325SL is one of the few notebook 
  65. products today to feature two such sockets (Type II is the current 
  66. standard specification).

  68.      The DECpc 325SL is available with removable hard disk drive in 
  69. 80MB or 120MB capacities.  Users can remove any of the PC's drives 
  70. for purposes of securing data, exchanging drives with co-workers, or 
  71. as a means of convenient field-swap to a higher-capacity unit.

  73.      Sophisticated power management facilities include intelligent 
  74. operations -- the unit can respond to the work habits of its user, 
  75. then suspend power at times of no usage.  Also included are an 
  76. on-screen fuel gauge, fast-recharge main batteries and optional 
  77. backup via standard alkaline batteries.  Main battery life is up to 
  78. 6.5 hours.

  82.      The new Digital PC also features a range of easy to use, 
  83. upgradable video displays.  The standard 9.5 inch (24.13 cm)  
  84. monochrome display uses VGA graphics to produce high-contrast 
  85. monochrome images in 64 shades of gray.  An optional F-STN 
  86. passive-matrix display technology features 256 colors at 640 x 480 
  87. resolution.  Moreover, a highly advanced, 9.5 inch (24.13 cm) TFT 
  88. active-matrix color display and processor upgrade kit will be 
  89. available in early spring, 1993.

  91.      Other features include three-level, ROM-based security, a 
  92. cableless trackball that connects to an ergonomically-designed hot 
  93. shoe built in to the front of the keyboard, interface to an I/O port 
  94. replicator, support for an external, simultaneous color display, and 
  95. "hot-swap" battery exchange capability without powering down the 
  96. unit.

  99. Digital can deliver leading technology today, with a path to the 
  100. future," says Roger Matus, Director of Marketing for Digital's 
  101. Personal Computer Business Unit.  "Customers want power and 
  102. performance in a notebook PC, but they also want strong flexibility 
  103. and upgradability, too.  The DECpc 325SL gives them those features."

  105. Packaging, Availability

  107.      Standard with the new DECpc 325SL will be 64KB cache, 4MB RAM, 
  108. removable 80MB or 120MB hard drive, 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy drive, 
  109. LCD VGA Super Twist Sidelit display or 256-color passive matrix 
  110. display, NiMH battery pack, serial, parallel, keyboard/mouse and 
  111. docking port, MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 system software.

  113. The standard unit also includes pre-loaded fax and communications 
  114. software from Bit Software, Inc., plus snap-on trackball, keyboard/
  115. mouse Y-connector and carrying case.

  117.      The unit, peripherals and accessories are available 
  118. immediately; the 486SL processor and active-matrix color display 
  119. will be available in early spring, 1993.
