- Zahir,

- What I mean by "freshman-level rhetoric" is the type of rhetoric
- we find in freshman-level writing classes often (and, unfortunately
- in other levels as well, but that's another topic). It refers to
- the type of writing which asserts a statement (a "claim) and then
- "supports" that claim, not with "warrants," but with repetition of
- the claim.
-
- Now, the requirement that claims must have warrants in order to
- be valid is, certainly, reflective of the rhetoric of English.
- The same requirement for claims and warrants occurs in other
- languages, but what is accepted as a warrant varies from one
- language to another. In Greek, for example, the acceptable
- warrants are different.
-
- This list is conducted in English, for better or worse :-)
- Consequently, the rhetoric of English is implied and assumed.
-
- I was not trying to "shut up anyone." I was suggesting
- that those who wish to present an argument will be more
- successful if they employ the rhetorical conventions of
- the language in use. More succesful, that is, in getting
- others to at least consider the argument, rather than
- rejecting it out of hand.
-
- [And, since you asked, I can't tell from the information in
- my e-mail directory who sent a message, just that it came
- from XCULT-L. But that's not a problem we need to try
- to solve on this list. Remember? We had that discussion
- a few months ago :-) ]
