- Hello,
- In response to Oliver's request, my name is Marc Thompson, and I'm a
- graduate student in English literature working on my dissertation at the
- University of Cincinnati. I originally subscribed to XCULT-L because of my
- wife's interest in Second Language Acquisition and ESL; however, as the mail
- started to roll in, I found myself following the various discussions (esp. the
- media/communications discussion apparently led by Zahir). My wife is from
- Argentina, and my few journeys to that country have broadened my horizens a
- bit.
- Recently, with the nomination of Zoe Baird, controversy has erupted
- regarding her fitness to preside over immigration services since she knowingly
- employed illegal aliens as houseworkers. Behind the very obvious issue of
- public trust, this controversy brings to light the status of US immigration
- practices and our treatment of immigrants (legal and illegal) in this country.
- Particularly with Clinton's recent about-face on the Haitian refugee issue, I
- think the question of immigrants in (or to) this country is becoming
- problematic.
- This is my first message to XCULT-L, and I hope someone will respond to
- this open-ended query.
- Sincerely,
-
- /
