- (JAN. 19) PAC RIM INTELLIGENCE REPORT - A delegation led by Mr. Omar Farooq,
- Commissioner of Chittagong from Bangladesh, and which included three members
- from the BPP (expansion unknown) news agency; four members from the relief
- department, home affairs department, and foreign affairs department of the prime
- minister's office; and 12 newsmen and journalists from REUTER, BBC, VOA, AP
- news agencies, broadcasting stations, and newspapers visited Yinbyu repatriation
- center at 1200 on 7 January and inspected repatriation works and interviewed
- some families.
- They were welcomed by U Than Aye, director of the immigration and manpower
- department; U Tin Maung Lwin, deputy director; and employees of the reception
- centers. U Maung Maung Swe, staff officer of the reception center, explained
- the repatriation matters to the newsmen.
- The Commissioner of Chittagong and party next went to Kyaukhlegar village,
- met with elders of the local mosque, and interviewed some of the returnees.
- They returned to Bangladesh at 1400.
- In accordance with the bilateral agreement on the repatriation of those who
- illegally left Myanmar (Burma) for Bangladesh, three delegations led by
- respective camp officials of the country on the other side yesterday transferred
- 2,364 returneesl,151 males and 1,213 femalesfrom 512 households.
- It has been learned that, from 22 September 1992 to 13 January 1993, a
- total of 14,485 persons7,094 males and 7,391 femalesfrom 3,199 households, who
- illegally left the country, have been repatriated so far.
