  15. However, I take issue with one comment Matthew made about limiting
  16. the contents of this discussion list to topics which are 'implicitly
  17. relevant to graduate students in psychology'. Who decides exactly
  18. what such topics are?

  20. For myself, I think the football discussion is an outstanding example
  21. of how psychologists can take a real-world phenomenon like football
  22. and render various interpretations of it--for example, see sf's
  23. psychodynamic interpretation and my social learning approach to the
  24. issue, as well as the 'football as rape' motif advanced by another
  25. (sorry i cannot remember the author's name at present) poster.

  27. We could limit ourselves to discussing sanctioned  topics mentioned
  28. only in journal articles, but that's exactly what's wrong with
  29. scientific psychology today, I contend--we need to talk more about
  30. real world social phenomena, not less! Also, there's the separate issue
  31. of the potential loss of our humanity by limiting our 'conversational
  32. topics'. Is PSYCGRAD an electronic journal? Should we limit our
  33. discussions to journal-like topics? I thought that's what PSYCGRD-J
  34. was for--the more formal discussion of topics of interest to
  35. psychologists whereas psycgrad is more informal.

  37. This doesn't mean that I approve of flames or posts that are made withou
  38. careful intellectual thought. Maybe we need to work harder to define
  39. appropriate and inappropriate post types. Matthew, perhaps exemplars
  40. would be helpful, even if they are hypothetical.

  42. This is just my .02 worth on what i consider to be a pretty serious
  43. issue (note: as always, this is most certainly *not* a flame; if it
  44. is taken as one, I apologize in advance for not stating my thoughts
  45. clearly enough).
