- I concur with Larry Schankman. Internet reference sources must be studied
- and kept abreast with in the same way as we try to do for other e-sources
- and print sources. While I realize that technology access inhibits many
- people from doing efficient work at the reference desk, I think that such
- things as Reference by Appointments (what we call individual consultations
- with a reference librarian..for in-depth service) would be good places
- to begin practicing or perhaps dabbling in the possibilities. That's
- how I started. I monitor Hytelnet and watch the main e-mail based conferences
- in the subject areas for which I am the primary reference contact. In my
- case those are Humanist and Shakesper. Barbara Schloman, Julie McDaniel
- and I have just finished a book chapter on strategies for using Internet
- sources for reference service. It is in press at the moment but I can send
- drafts to people who are interested.
