- Larry Schankman raises some interesting points. To address his question
- about how to encourage the rest of the reference librarians (and also
- management) to learn these new technologies: one way is to hold a
- library faculty retreat for planning how to integrate emerging technologies
- when faced with budget realities, etc. We will be holding such a retreat
- this Spring at the University of Miami because we are faced with several
- issues/events/problems which would be overwhelming without planning
- and evaluation: our computer equipment budget is woefully inadequate,
- compared to our materials budget (which is also inadequate, but not
- woefully so), we desperately need to provide better electronic access
- to our collections, and we will be building a new wing to the library
- in 3-4 years. In addition, our last retreat was held 6 years ago,
- and its appropriate to plan for the next 5 years. Hopefully, the
- retreat process will address the very real issues of training and
- staffing -- you just can't throw the Internet at people and
- expect them to embrace it without adequate preparation.

- In writing this response, I also realized that maybe one of the
- reasons why we do not have management resistance to Internet use
- is because several of us who are on tenure track are using the
- Internet to do research: management may very well recognize that
- the Internet provides us with opportunities for publishing that
- were not there before. I'm wondering if librarians who work in
- institutions where they have faculty status and/or tenure requirements
- involving research and publication have encountered resistance
- to Internet use from their administrations. (Or maybe I'm just
- lucky that management is supportive of my Internet use.)
