- A while back I requested information/opinions about the advantages or
- disadvantages of tapeloading UMI's Periodical Abstracts versus IAC's
- Expanded Academic Index. Since almost everyone who responded asked for a
- summary, I will ask the forebearance of all and provide a brief
- recapitulation to the list.
-
- Of about a dozen responses, eight actually offered opinions and provided
- reasons for their decisions. Of these eight, six favored UMI's Periodical
- Abstracts Online (PAO), and two favored IAC's Expanded Academic Index
- (EAI). The main reason given for the decision to go either way was
- actually the same--the academic content of the database. Obviously,
- people had differing opinions on which was more academic. Other reasons
- for *not* going with IAC were a)questions about the quality of indexing,
- b) documentation problems, and c)poor customer service. IAC's higher price
- was also a concern.
-
- Opinions were also expressed about options other than EAI or PAO, and
- although I found them interesting, they weren't really relevant to my
- concerns.
-
- Our decision was to go with PAO. Although there were differences among us
- as to which database was more academic, the final decision was that PAO
- (we're getting the Research II version) had the edge. The disparity in
- price was considered, but was not a deciding factor.
-
- Much thanks to all who responded.
