- I hope the article that Hope Tillman and I wrote on "Using the
- Internet for Reference" which appeared in the January 1993 issue
- of _Online_ will help convince librarians that "perual of the net"
- is NOT play time and is very much APPROPRIATE FOR OFFICIAL LIBRARY
- TIME.
-
- I would encourage reference librarians not to hide their use
- of the Internet -- rather, to demonstrate its usefulness whenever
- they can. In our article we feature lists like LIBREF-L, MEDLIB-L
- and BUSLIB-L to show how rapid communication among colleagues
- made possible through Internet lists facilitates reference service.
- Yes, dialing into OPACs and other remote databases is useful,
- but it is the communication that takes place over the net
- through, for example, the posting of "does anybody know?" type
- questions that makes the Internet such a valuable reference tool.
-
- There will always be people who think that if it's fun, it can't
- be work -- and ya gotta admit, reading e-mail can be fun, even
- hilarious, at times. And, you can't spend all of your time at
- work perusing your email (which is why I'm writing this at 9 pm
- Friday night, at home). But IMHO, neither should we hide our
- use of this medium during working hours. I have received answers
- to patron questions that I spent hours looking for in print
- sources through posting questions to lists like LIBREF-L and
- BUSLIB-L --and some came within hours of posting them. To
- me, this is truly amazing -- which is why we wrote the article
- for _Online_. We wanted to share this incredible communications
- tool with our colleagues.
-
- <off soapbox> :-)
