  23. I am currently looking for ANY information regarding the following:

  26.                              TONTOUTA TASK FORCE

  29.         On 16 May 1942, two B-17E aircraft, five flight crews and ground
  30. specialists departed Hickam Field, T.H., with less than twenty-four hours
  31. notice, for Fiji, where three additional B-17E aircraft were added to the task
  32. force.  Following a day of testing, the five aircraft flew to Tontouta, New
  33. Caledonia, a small landing strip forty kilometers north of Noumea.  The
  34. aircraft operated under Navy command, flying reconnaissance flights in the
  35. Solomon Islands area for the next four weeks.  One aircraft crashed 8 June
  36. 1942, in New Zealand, killing the task force commander, R. Cobb, and the flight
  37. crew.  On 25 June, the remaining four aircraft and flight crews flew to
  38. Brisbane, becoming part of the 19th Bombardment Group operations in
  39. Australia and New Guinea.
