- Hello -
-
- I am currently looking for ANY information regarding the following:
-
- ***********************
- TONTOUTA TASK FORCE
- ***********************
-
- On 16 May 1942, two B-17E aircraft, five flight crews and ground
- specialists departed Hickam Field, T.H., with less than twenty-four hours
- notice, for Fiji, where three additional B-17E aircraft were added to the task
- force. Following a day of testing, the five aircraft flew to Tontouta, New
- Caledonia, a small landing strip forty kilometers north of Noumea. The
- aircraft operated under Navy command, flying reconnaissance flights in the
- Solomon Islands area for the next four weeks. One aircraft crashed 8 June
- 1942, in New Zealand, killing the task force commander, R. Cobb, and the flight
- crew. On 25 June, the remaining four aircraft and flight crews flew to
- Brisbane, becoming part of the 19th Bombardment Group operations in
- Australia and New Guinea.
-
- The information that I seek concerning this task force includes:
-
- 1. Addresses of persons in the task force (or where they can be found)
-
- 2. Information describing the purpose of the task force
-
- 3. Data concerning the results achieved by the task force
-
- Any and all information regarding this task force would be immensely
- appreciated. I have exhausted a good number of library collections in the North
- Texas Area.
