  13. Texas Tech University offers large sections (300) of the two basic American
  14. history courses.  Two graduate assistants are assigned to each class for
  15. assistance in grading, etc.  Some classes meet for three hours of lecture
  16. per week with graduate assistants taking responsibility for non-mandatory
  17. discussion groups.  However, most professors choose to lecture only twice
  18. a week with--the remaining hour is made up in smaller discussion groups led
  19. by graduate teaching assistant.  There are generally eight discussion
  20. sections for each large class (we call them monster classes).  I'm not
  21. currently teaching, but you may want to contact somone there.  The number
  22. is 806-742-3744.

  24. Dr. Ernest Wallace, a former faculty member at Tech, used to tell me
  25. (repeatedly) of the good old days when he tried an experiment--he taught
  26. a class of 1,000 students with I don't know how many teaching assistants.
