-
-
- I have one 3 tower CD-Connection system and will be upgrading my
- second CD-Connection server from 2 to 3 towers shortly.
-
- I haven't seen ANY degradation when moving from 2 to 3 towers. On
- the contrary, our 3 drive tower has been more stable than the 2 drive
- unit (for various unrelated reasons!).
-
- There are a few things to make sure of when you upgrade to three
- though:
-
- If using the ASC-88 cards, there should be no problems. Just be sure
- to set memory addresses to 3 sequential locations (i.e., CC00, D000,
- D400).
-
- If using the ASC-86 cards (highly recommended due to increased
- performance), there are a couple of things to look out for:
-
- 1. You will have a skip in memory locations (as I remember, there is
- no D400). To get the cards to work right, you set them at three
- memory locations with one skip between them (i.e., D000, D800, DC00).
- You then need to add a parameter to the line in your CONFIG.SYS
- where the CBISDRV.SYS is loaded: /SKIP. The default is one skip.
- If you have more, you need to add a number.
-
- 2. Be sure that you are using the proper revision of CBISDRV.SYS.
- We found that the very latest one did not work. The revision for
- 7/22/92 works fine. If you use the wrong version, you will get an
- error message to the effect that an invalid parameter was specified
- and you will lock as XCDSERVE is loaded.
-
- Also, be sure that you check to make sure that the version of
- ASC_MODE.EXE that is shipped with your interface card is current.
-
- Note, by the way, that you can actually run 4 towers (including the
- master unit) for a total of 28 drives if you are using the recent
- driver and software that supports extended drive naming. From my
- experiences with 3 towers, I would think that there would not be much
- of a degradation (if any) in speed. While we have had problems with
- CBIS' software, none of these has been attributable to the number of
- drives mounted on the server. Incidentally, we currently run Mylex
- 486/33 ISA motherboards with 16 Mb of RAM on each CD Server.
-
- CBIS should be able to provide information and updated drivers if you
- run into trouble. (I highly recommend talking with Chris Hill of
- CBIS).
