- Can you up the memory in the '286s to, say, 2 meg and then use DOS
- 5.0's tricks to open up additional conventional memory? Memory cards
- are still out there for those old machines and RAM is still cheap.
-
- Another suggestion: Upgrade your XTs and ATs to SXs through
- motherboard swaps. No matter what you do, past a certain point, you
- really will need to add memory and the capabilities of the '386 to
- continue accessing these ever growing programs. If graphics
- capabilities, etc., are not that important, you can stick an
- 80386SX/33 motherboard in any standard form factor XT or AT for $110-
- 135. Add a couple of 1 meg SIMMs for another $80, an IDE FD/HD/IO
- card for $25, DOS 5.0 for around $50 and you'll have a workstation
- that will handle all that UMI will throw at it. (You may need a
- keyboard as well). At $265 apiece, it's not ultra-cheap, but beats
- having to completely replace your PCs and will speed up access as
- well.
