- Sonia: I'm surprised Mike Masuda hasn't already suggested Quicksilver
- Messenger Service as a must for the psychedelic music experience. With
- my man Nicky Hopkins on alot of their albums, and guitarist John
- Cippolina on all (I think) this stuff is just great. Although they, like
- the Byrds started out kinda artsy-country-folky-rock, they were a major
- part of the San Fran. acid/music/happenings/lets go to the Fillmore/
- 1 tab or 2/dig the scene digging you digging it scene.
-
- As far as the Byrds, the only album of theirs I have is _Untitled_. It
- has the live album side long version of "Eight Miles High", which is
- fantastic ! I have about 90 % of the Quicksilver stuff, and about
- 80-90 % of the Airplane (some wore out, my old roomate had _Bless Its
- Pointed Little Head_ - great ! Also, I would point out that the 1st
- Jefferson Starship album _Blows Against The Empire_ is also very
- good - it came out in about '73, and has people from Airplane, Grateful
- Dead, Crosby Stills, and others all pitching in. If you listen to
- "Have You Seen The Stars Tonight" please listen on a good stereo with good
- bass respnse, because there's a part where I guess it's Harvey Brooks'
- bass kicks in, along with Jack Cassady (my favorite bass player), and it
- really just blows you away.
-
- Then, let's see - what else was essential back than ?? Well, actually just
- about anything that turnded YOU on, or gave you a buzz of some kind. Anything
- that we all wanted to experiment with - yes psychedics drew from everywhere !
- That really what launched my exploration into different sounds - celtic, jazz,
- jazz fusion, straight flat-pickin bluegrass, further experimentation in
- classical (especially the 'early' and baroque music, and electronics.
-
- I'll have to go peruse my record collection tonight and pick out a few more
- from the area. Ah here's one - Country Joe and The Fish. Moby Grape. Of
- course Hendrix, Joplin, Cream, several Beatles and Stones albums, early
- Steve Miller. I thought Soft Machine fit this genre - they were definitely
- around then.
-
-
- To be continued.....
