If I remember correctly, They would just assume their fates.
The reason I think this is that when Aragorn first met Arwen, he seemed to think that she was human but was told that she had Elven life. Also the LOTR seems to describe the sons of Elrond more as men than Elves. This indicates to me that they would only get the fate of the Eldar not the shape.
