- I think he said that no similarities with _contemporary_ geography
- and history were intended. That is, he didn't intend the LOTR
- as an allegory. But Middle-earth was intended to be this world
- in the mythical past, specifically Europe (the parts where the
- story happens that is). In fact the coastline in the Third Age
- in the map in Fellowship looks a whole lot like Europe's
- continental shelf. The Shire maps onto the British Isles (as
- I understand Tolkien intended). What's interesting is that
- Mordor seems to fall smack in the middle of France. :-)
