  32. A couple of months ago I bought an AT&T 5400 and am extremely
  33. pleased with its range, clarity, and security.  The features you
  34. MUST (imo) are:
  35.  
  36.     Auto Security:  prevents other handsets from using your base unit
  37.             when your handset is not on the charger.  Higher-end
  38.             models accomplish this by having the base unit 
  39.             periodically (i.e. every few seconds) verify that 
  40.             the handset it is in contact with is the authorized one.
  41.  
  42.     Auto Channel:    The base unit constantly scans for the clearest channel 
  43.             and automatically switches the conversation to that 
  44.             channel.

  46. The AT&T 5400 has these features and can be had for around $100.  I
  47. believe it lists at $129.99, but I got mine at Costco for $89.99.
